Green with Envy

I saw "Twilight" last night with a couple of friends. I have to admit, in my opinion, it wasn't fantabulous but I did like it. I liked quite a few things about it. There were also a few things I think could have been better. All in all though, I really enjoyed it. I love a good romance.

The point of this post though, isn't to do a review of the movie. I was actually wondering how many of you other writers out there are absolutely green with envy. I admit, I am. I look at Stephanie Meyer and covet, (a little bit) her success.

I wonder if there is actually another untold story out there that would make it this big and could I actually be the one to tell it? Honestly, I doubt it. But there is another part of me that screams, heck ya!!

Why not? Just because I didn't major in creative writing, have no formal training, know only a few of the rules, and have barely started in the creative art of writing, there is no reason why I can't become rich and famous, right? Now that was an extraordinarily long sentence! What writer out there doesn't long for this kind of notoriety?

As I was chatting with the universe the other day, I begged for this same success. It answered back with, "Why? What is your motivation? Money, popularity? Vanity?"
I, of course, answered, "no, yes, no, maybe. So what?" It put me in my place. But I found myself pointing at Stephanie Meyer and saying, "Well, she has it!" Like a petulant four year old.

Do we always want what we can't have? Or don't have? Is Stephanie Meyer happy in her success or does she wish she could have her anonymity and privacy back? Hmm. Who knows? Anyway. Those are my thoughts on that! Be careful what you pray for. You just might get it. In this case though, I'd take my chances!

Though I don't know Steph M, I know people that know people that know her :-) And although I admit to be a bit green, I've heard that it's also been really hard for her and her family--she went from being a PTA mom to a mega-superstar. They had to move to a gated community and after Breaking Dawn came out she received death threats, thousands of returned books, and painful reviews all over the internet. This could all be gossip--I don't know--but I think hitting the BIG time that fast and hard, and getting such a cult following would definitely present challenges. I'd be happy with a few hundred thousand copies a year :-)

hi, it's me! melissa c said...

You know Josi, that is a great comment. I didn't know these things. That would be really hard. I wondered about what changes her life took after her success. It doesn't sound so great, does it?

You are probably right though. Be happy where you are planted.

I think that one of the biggest lessons in life, is "Grow where you are planted" (obviously I am still working on this and probably always will be)

That doesn't mean of course that I don't think that you can't write a successful book. Not at all. Actually, I think you are one of those people that once you decide what you want, you don't let go until you have it. Which is good.

The point I am trying to make is no matter where you are, growing.

I don't know Steph M either, and I am sure that the changes in her life, have been a hard adjustment. I do hope though, that she is growing where she is planted. Gated community or not.

I think it IS human nature to be a tad green. However, I think that also helps us define what we want, and take steps to evolve ourselves more.

Most of the time, we pick our battles and challenges. Few, come to us. If this is an animal you want to tame, Go for it. You can do anything you want to.

I know you can.

I totally get this--there are definitely times I think it's be nice to try out that kind of trial. :) Or even just get a tiny bit of that level of success.
